carte blanche seeks new Fiction Editor AND Publicist!!

carte blanche, founded in 2004, is the official online magazine of the Quebec Writers’ Federation. We are celebrating over 13 years of promoting poetry, creative nonfiction, comics, translation, photography, fiction, and literary commentary from Quebec, Canada, and around the world. With ongoing support from the Canada Council of the Arts and private donations, carte blanche is able to pay all of its contributors, and maintains a dynamic and unique niche online.

Editor Definition in English Dictionary.Currently, carte blanche is seeking two enthusiastic members to join the Montreal-based editorial team:

Fiction Editor—the editor works both independently and in collaboration with the editorial team to help steer the magazine forward. The successful candidate would lead the fiction section of carte blanche for three issues per year (winter, spring/summer and fall). In particular, they would read all fiction submissions received, organize submissions and respond to authors through Submittable. They would also copyedit and suggest more substantial changes to fiction accepted for publication, when necessary. Because carte blanche is based in Montreal and publishes French texts in translation, knowledge of both English and French is an asset for this position. Excellent copyediting skills and keen attention to detail are key. Above all, we seek a passionate fan of literature and art—someone who has a love for narrative in their DNA.

Publicist—the publicist would be in charge of social media and promotion of magazine issues, blog posts, events, and more–demonstrated strategies for Twitter and Facebook promotion required. The successful candidate will also support the Managing Editor with communication, and the organization and building of each of the annual three issues of carte blanche. Knowledge of WordPress, elementary coding, Photoshop, and Submittable is essential.

Both positions receive a modest annual stipend. These are ideal positions for any individual not depending on it for a full-time living, but nevertheless committed to contributing to and being part of a flourishing community online.

Interested candidates should send a brief summary of their qualifications and reasons for applying to editors@carte-blanche.org before September 21, 2018. The positions’ duties will formally commence January 2019, but will include a transitional training period starting October 2018.
