The rumours are true: we’re turning ten years old this fall! We know, we know, we don’t look a day over three. Don’t let our good looks fool you: since we first sprang from the QWF as a small community-oriented publication, carte blanche has grown exponentially. Both our readers and contributors now hail from a wide range of locales in Canada and around the world.
carte blanche began with the imperative to promote a multiplicity of voices and stories through different forms and genres. And we believe it is imperative, for it is through these stories that we understand one another and the chaotic world outside. We’re still at it today and we plan to continue on for another decade. Hell, another century if you’ll have us.
We’ve got quite a few plans to mark our anniversary. We’ll be celebrating all year leading up to our autumnal birthday: at the beginning of each month, a different carte blanche editor will share their own Top 10 list on the blog. Len Epp’s Top Ten Canadian Keywords and Phrases was a mighty fine start if we do say so ourselves (and we do).
So here’s to us, and here’s to you, readers and writers of the world. We couldn’t keep this up without you, and for that you have our undying affection. It’s been a blast having you all along for the ride—let’s party!
