carte blanche, founded in 2004, is the official online magazine of the Quebec Writers’ Federation. We are celebrating over 13 years of promoting poetry, creative nonfiction, comics, translation, photography, fiction, and literary commentary from Quebec, Canada, and around the world. With ongoing support from the Canada Council of the Arts and private donations, carte blanche is able to pay all of its contributors, and maintains a dynamic and unique niche online.
Currently, carte blanche is seeking two enthusiastic members to join the Montreal-based editorial team:
Managing Editor—the editor works with the editor-in-chief to help steer the magazine forward. The successful candidate would support the editorial team in all aspects of production and promotion of three issues per year (winter, spring/summer and fall). In particular, they would oversee logistical matters relating to the successful and timely publication of every issue. They would maintain correspondence with authors, draft author contracts, manage submissions on Submittable, and upload and format content to maintain a quality online publication. Knowledge of WordPress, elementary coding and Photoshop is essential. Because carte blanche is based in Montreal and publish French texts in translation, knowledge of both English and French is an asset for this position. Excellent copyediting skills and keen attention to detail are key. Above all, we seek a passionate fan of literature and art—someone who has a love for narrative in their DNA.
Creative Non-Fiction—the editor would be in charge of reading all creative non-fiction submissions received and selecting quality content for the three annual issues of carte blanche along with the rest of the team. They would also pitch essay and interview ideas, and commission and oversee the satisfactory completion of these projects, copyediting and preparing all documents for publication.
Both editorial positions receive a modest annual stipend. These are ideal positions for any individual not depending on it for a full-time living, but nevertheless committed to contributing to and being part of a flourishing community online.
Interested candidates should send a brief summary of their qualifications and reasons for applying to firstname.lastname@example.org before March 15, 2018.
